The Grand Canyon Junior Ranger Program

by Lisa Mason on August 19, 2010

Taking a trip to the Grand Canyon is a great way for families to bond and spend quality time together. There are many things at the Grand Canyon for kids of all ages to enjoy. There are hiking trails that’s perfect for children such as the three-mile hike along the Rim Trail that leads to Maricopa Point or more challenging ones for the older kids. The Grand Canyon Railway is fun for the whole family as you venture back to the Old West by taking a ride on a steam engine.

Camping is a great way for the whole family to enjoy the Grand Canyon by watching the deer and other wildlife that wander freely around the park. In fact, it can be both fun and educational to watch the different animals or you can engage in some bird watching. There are many exciting species to view. However, the Junior Ranger Program is probably one of the most popular things for kids visiting the Grand Canyon to do.

It’s a great way for kids ages 4 to 14 to explore the outdoors and all the wonderful things the park has to offer. They’ll have the opportunity to go for a walk which will be led by one of the rangers and given a booklet from which they’ll need to complete four self-guided activities. Once they have completed the assigned task, they’ll be sworn in and receive a Junior Ranger certificate.

You can even buy a Junior Ranger patch for just under a couple of bucks for your child to sew on their favorite jacket. You can sign up for this program at designated areas located on the North and South Rims. The Grand Canyon is filled with all types of wonders and excitement that the whole family can share together and it’s a great learning experience for children.

I agree with you 100%, Grand Canyon is perfect for everybody. It is one of my favorite sites for family camping. I’d been there like ten times and the excitement is still as high as my first time. What I like the most is the hiking activity which is so worthy because of the surprising scenic views.
