Family Fun at the Grand Canyon- Top Family Vacation Spot

by Lisa Mason on April 6, 2010

There is plenty of family fun at the Grand Canyon. This is one of the reasons why the Grand Canyon is one of the top family vacation destinations in the United States with an average of 5 million visitors each year. Besides being a huge and amazing natural wonder, there are many fun activities that will put your family right in the middle of the canyon and the nature that surrounds it.

Family members of all ages will love the history, nature and beauty of the Grand Canyon. While you are there make sure to take advantage of these fun filled opportunities.

  • The Tusayan Ruin and Museum gives the family an idea of how life was 800 years ago for the Pueblo Indians in the area, and a visit to the Tavapai Observation Station will teach the whole family more about how the canyon was formed.
  • Ranger led programs at the Grand Canyon include hiking, habitat restoration, fossil walks, and many just for kids activities.
  • Take a trip on the Grand Canyon railway to see what life was like in the Old West.
  • Ride mules to the bottom of the canyon, either for the day or for an overnight camping trip.
  • Raft the Colorado River as a family, also either for a day trip or to stay for several nights.

To make sure that your family visit to the Grand Canyon is full of fun and adventure without any mishaps it is important to plan ahead and take some precautions.

Carry a cooler with water and snacks in your vehicle. In the event that something happens to the car you will need nourishment because with limited cell service it could be a while before help comes along. On that same note, make sure that you head out with a full tank of gas as gas stations are few and far between; this is the same thing for mechanics. There is one mechanic station on the South Rim.

The Grand Canyon is a popular and beautiful vacation destination that provides fun activities and sights for the entire family, and is definitely something that everyone should see at least once in their lives. What is your favorite memory or experience at the Grand Canyon?
